Start at Moffat, which has some great cafes, chip shop, petrol station and a high street full of little interesting shops.  Head out on the A708 towards the Ettrick Valley - a great route past St Mary's Loch and onwards to Selkirk.  Turn onto the A7, where views south to the Hills are superb.  Keep going into Hawick and head onto the A6088 - a splendid road which deserves some attention.  This takes you to Carter Bar (the Scottish - English crossing) where view north and south are breathtaking.  Continue down the A68 which passes through Northumberland National Park and veer south west onto the A6079 to Hexham.  Jump onto the A686 towards Alston and keep going across the moors uphill to Hartside Pass (summit).
